Kontaktör rölesi, anahtarlama elemanları olarak vakum kesici kullanır. Ana devre hareket edebilir konumda olup sabit kontaklar atmosferik basıncın 110-2 Pa değerinden daha az olduğu vakumlar içerisinde sızdırmaz muhafazalı bir haldedir. Vakum ortamı izole bir haldedir ve arc sönümleme özelliğine sahiptir. Bu sebeple vakum kontaktörler yüksek voltaj izolasyonu, küçük kontak teması, düşük kontak aşınması, uzun ömür ve benzeri özelliklere sahiptir.
